First off, calling skin cancer trends “parabolic” makes no sense.
A parabola goes up and then comes down. Skin cancer rates haven’t done that.
If sunscreen truly caused skin cancer and fixed it later, that would be… impressive. 🙃
This is a classic example of inserting words that sound smart without understanding them.
Now let’s talk science.
Correlation ≠ causation
Yes, sunscreen use and skin cancer rates rise together in observational studies, but that’s reverse causation. People at higher risk (fair skin, high sun exposure, prior sunburns) are more likely to use sunscreen (PMID: 19775356). That doesn’t mean sunscreen caused their cancer.
What actually causes skin cancer?
UV radiation. Especially intermittent intense exposure and sunburns.
What do randomized controlled trials show?
When sunscreen use is randomized, removing confounding variables, it reduces skin cancer risk (PMIDs: 10475183, 17132769, & 21135266)
✔ Daily sunscreen use significantly reduces squamous cell carcinoma
✔ Long-term follow-up shows reduced melanoma incidence
✔ No evidence sunscreen increases basal cell carcinoma
Vitamin D fear-mongering
Sunscreen does not cause clinically meaningful vitamin D deficiency. You can get adequate vitamin D from diet or supplementation without increasing skin cancer risk.
Inflammation claim?
There is no credible human evidence that sunscreen-induced skin inflammation causes cancer.
