Intermittent fasting has been proposed as a diet that improves health outcomes including inflammation, independent of caloric restriction. Some proponents of IF claim that it has unique benefits that can’t be obtained with a comparable non-fasting diet
A recent study attempted to address some of these questions by comparing IF to boring old caloric restriction (PMID: 40218888). Obese adults were randomized to one of 3 groups: control, IF, or caloric restriction (CR) for 12 months. The IF and CR diets were matched for calories. Both diets produced equal weight loss and there were no differences in inflammatory markers between the 2 treatments
As I have been saying for many years now, IF does not produce unique benefits compared to calorie equated non-IF diets. That said, some people find IF to be an easy way to restrict calories, and for them, IF may be a great option to improve their health but it does not appear to have unique benefits on weight loss or metabolic health
