A new study (PMID: 40140714) made a splash when it concluded that sucralose may increase appetite. This study looked at hypothalamic blood flow (tends to increase with increased appetite) as well as short term subjective ratings of hunger in people who consumed a beverage containing sucralose, a beverage containing sucrose (table sugar), or water. The researchers found that sucralose increased hypothalamic blood flow & hunger ratings compared to the sucrose beverage. This means that sucralose is going to make you eat more & make you fat right? Not really… let me drop some science on you
1st off, these are all short term measures & mechanistic data & not actual outcomes. 2nd off, it is NOT surprising that sucralose increased hunger relative to sucrose… IT HAS NO CALORIES BUT SUCROSE DOES! Of course the actual calorie containing beverage will dampen hunger more than a non-caloric beverage. What you didn’t hear in the media was that the sucralose beverage & water had the same hunger ratings, hmm wonder why you didn’t hear about that?
Finally, & most importantly, the ACTUAL LONG TERM HUMAN RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIALS where people consume beverages containing artificial sweeteners (ASB) like sucralose in place of sugar sweetened beverages (SSB), people LOSE significant weight (PMIDs: 35285920 & 32216045) & they even lose more weight with ASB compared to water as a replacement for SSBs (PMID: 37794246)
While this data is interesting, shouldn’t we care MORE about the actual long term, hard outcome data????
