That’s the headline going viral — but it’s not what the data actually show.
In the new Cell Metabolism study (PMID: 40882621), men were randomized to a minimally processed food group at maintenance or a 500 kcal surplus or an ultraprocessed food group at maintenance or a 500 kcal surplus. Both groups ate the same calories… and neither gained significant weight and the maintenance groups actually lost weight, though the minimally processed group lost more weight
However, when you DIG into the supplementary data (yes it was buried in the supplementary data) you can see that it appears the minimally processed groups did in fact consume less calories (~200 kcal less) per day than the ultraprocessed group
The ultra-processed group had a tiny uptick in LDL:HDL ratio and a few small hormone shifts, but the “calories don’t matter” takeaway? 🚫 Not supported.
As usual — sexy headline, sloppy interpretation. Now I”m not saying you SHOULD eat UPFs or that they are good for you, but the idea they cause weight gain independent of calories? Complete fabrication by social media influencers and mainstream media morons looking for clickbait
